In 1993 Anne De Paepe became the Chair of the Centre of Medical Genetics. In that same year she started as an associate professor of human and medical genetics and became a full professor in 1997.

Under her direction the Centre for Medical Genetics turned into a multidisciplinary and renowned centre on genetics with more than 150 collaborators. Her research centre enjoys both national and international recognition in the field of heritable collagen disorders.

Scientific Research

Research in the field of heritable connective tissue disorders, a.o. clinical and molecular aspects of heritable collagen – and elastin disorders, such as Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Marfan Syndrome and related diseases, Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum and Cutis Laxa Syndromes. Research is focused mainly on the identification of new genes for these diseases, the study of the molecular pathogenesis, optimization of diagnostic tests and genetic advice and development of therapeutic perspectives for these diseases.

Research funding : 94 research grants from various sources, such as Ghent University, Fund for Scientific Research Flanders, European Community, NIH-USA, Institute of Science and Technology Flanders, Flemish Government and diverse scientific foundations (PXE International, AFSED, …).
