Antonio Bulbena, MD, PhD, MSc (Cantab) is professor and Chairman of Psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry and Forensic Medicine in the Universitat Autonoma Barcelona, and Research Director of the Institute of Neuropsychiatry and Addictions Hospital del Mar Barcelona. He did his medical training at the U. Autonoma Medical School, and obtained his MD at the University of Barcelona. He spent three years in the Department of Psychiatry (Prof M Roth) at the University of Cambridge, Addenbrookes and Fulbourn Hospital, training in clinical research in Psychiatry, obtaining a MSc under Prof G Berrios and Prof. E.Miller.
Dr. Bulbena has been doing extensively teaching in several medical schools in Spain for the last 25 years.
He has also carried out an active career in management, either as director of the hospital and also creating networks of services including general hospital, psychiatric hospital, community care, inpatient and outpatient adult and child psychiatry, mobile teams, inpatient and outpatient addiction psychiatry.
His research includes topics like dementia and pseudodementia, psychiatric emergencies, memory and depression, chocolate and carbohydrates, clinical measurement in psychiatry, phobias, seasonality and biometeorology. More recently he has carried out international comparisons on attitudes towards psychiatry among medical students and also advanced research in neuroimaging.
His most prominent line of research is the relationship between anxiety disorders and somatic conditions as he observed and originally described in 1988 the strong link between several anxiety disorders and joint laxity (a benign hereditary collagen). This strong partnership has extensively researched by his group in the last 25 years. He has put forward a new model of anxiety disorders based on the relationship between the connective tissue and the autonomic nervous system.
