As a neurogastroenterologist, I specialise in diseases of the gut that affect its nervous system, muscles and connective tissue. I also specialise in gut symptoms that occur due to abnormal communication between the brain and the gut such as in stress. The patients I see most commonly are those with complex unexplained gastrointestinal disorders. I work in a multidisciplinary way with pain specialists, dieticians and psychologists. I have access to sophisticated diagnostic techniques to investigate gut function and use these to guide treatment.

My clinical interests are in Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders e.g. Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Functional Dyspepsia etc; abdominal pain; gastrointestinal motility disorders and gastrointestinal manifestations of systemic disease e.g. diabetes, neurological disorders and connective tissue disorders like scleroderma and I have a particular research and clinical interest in gut manifestations of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

The national Ehlers-Danlos syndrome diagnostic service is a specialist service for individuals and families who are suspected to have complex Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS).

The service focuses on diagnosing complex EDS. Sometimes, it may be more appropriate for an individual to see their local general clinical genetics team in the first instance who can refer on to us if there is a complex diagnostic question. When the main issues are managing the day-to-day aspects of EDS it can be more useful to be referred to other specialists such as rheumatologists, physiotherapists or paediatricians.

My clinics are dedicated to working with clients with EDS, HSD and hypermobility related pain. I see approximatley 15 -20 people a week with these conditions either in person at the clinics or via online consultation. Each consultation takes a full medical history, static and dynamic movement assessment. A program of movement is then designed to suit the individual person. The program will follow the Integral Movement Method for hypermobility which is designed for people with chronic pain.

My specialist interest lies in complex shoulder and elbow pain/instability dysfunctions. The majority of this lies in the hypermobile spectrum but by no means exclusively. I work closely with a wide range of Rheumatology, Pain, Psychology, and Orthopedic specialists across the Southeast of England. I am registered with almost all UK based health insurance companies.

My ethos is ‘simplexity’, that means I take a very clear and simple approach to complex problems. If you would like to arrange an appointment to discuss a particular issue I would be more than happy to give a clear, simple, and professional opinion.

I am a specialist in Rheumatology and Sport & Exercise Medicine. Over the last 20 years I have built up a Rheumatology and SEM service in the NHS. This has including the setting up and development of a Multi-Discipliniary Hypermobility outpatient and inpatient service at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in 2008. The hospital now has the biggest inpatient service for joint hypermobility in the UK. In 2012 I set up a Dance medicine service at the RNOH. We have seen over 1200 dancers with injuries and medical problems since then. This has included dancers with joint hypermobility and associated injuries. I have a strong belief in holistic medicine. This includes the use of exercise as treatment for a wide range of chronic conditions. This is very often more effective than medication. I therefore prescribe exercise on a regular basis both in the treatment and in the prevention of disease. I also strongly believe in the multi-discipliniary approach to the management of chronic diseases and especially in the management of patients with joint hypermobility.

Trained as a sports massage and soft tissue therapist and personal trainer. I am diagnosed with HSD myself and decided to train to be a therapist as the 2 disciplines are the only help and relief I have found helpful with this disorder.

I understand how to treat and help those with EDS and HSD through my own personal experience, research and through working with fellow sufferers.

I work with my clients and help to reduce their pain and discomfort, whilst empowering them to be able to help themselves.

I have empathy and understanding with fellow EDS and HSD clients as I have the condition myself.

I, like all professionals, am always learning, furthering my education and keeping up to date with new skills and research to deliver the best possible treatment to my clients.

I use several different treatment modalities to help clients, as we are all unique and respond differently.

I graduated in 2001 with a BSc(Hons) Podiatry degree from University College London (UCL), & since then I have worked in both the private sector and the NHS where I currently hold the post of Advanced Specialist Podiatrist in MSK & Paediatrics. In 2004, I set up Ablefeet providing premium podiatry care for all, with my main area of interest in paediatrics, biomechanics and surgery. Since setting up the practice my wide-ranging sports expertise has allowed me to treat a variety of athletes, young and old. In the last 10 years I have developed a greater interest in EDS and HSD as I was receiving multiple referrals for children with these conditions. This has led to further study and lecturing on the topic at national level on several occasions. I am also the current Vice-Chair of the Children’s Podiatry Special Advisory Group to the whole of podiatry in the UK.

I continue to challenge myself by maintaining the highest level of continued professional development with an evidence based practice approach, by regularly attending courses, reading journal articles and contributing to on-line debates, as well as the raft of on-line lectures that are now available.
