Jane Mitakides

L. Jane (Helsley) Mitakides of Dayton, Ohio is a businesswoman and entrepreneur, with a specialization in strategic communications.  President and founder of Helsley Advertising, Jane was also the Democratic candidate for congress from Ohio’s Third District in 2004 and 2008.

She began her advertising career in New York with the Madison Avenue firm of Calderhead-Jackson Advertising before founding Helsley Advertising.  Within the very first year of its existence, Jane’s company won the prestigious “Best of” Hermes award for Excellence in Newspaper advertising.   The company continued serving national clients and winning awards until it was purchased by a larger company in the 1990’s. During her communications career, Ms. Mitakides has also won national  professional recognition including ANDY, ADDY, Hermes and CLIO awards.  She served as the national editor for “The Gunn Salute,” a national Scottish heritage society newsletter, and contributing editor to “Echo,” the national publication of Cox Broadcasting Corporation.

Jane has served her community on a number of boards and organizations, including the Development Board of St. Elizabeth Hospital, Opera Guild and the Friends of the Dayton Ballet.  She has chaired Dayton’s Opera Ball, and is a member of Opera Guild, and The Jefferson Patterson Society of The Dayton Art Institute.  With She is also currently serving as the Communications Chair for National Society of Colonial Dames of America – Ohio, and is a member of The National Genealogy Society, and the Virginia Genealogy Society. Janewas a founder of the Democratic National Committee’s Small Business Council, and has worked with a wide variety of Democratic efforts, including President Clinton in 1992 and 1996, the late Texas Gov. Ann Richards. She was a founding member of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s Women’s Council.
In 2014, Jane was named to the National Board of the Ehlers Danlos Society. A dedicated supporter of the work of the foundation for many years, Jane has been actively involved in both the organization and her husband’s work as one of the leading authorities on craniofacial pain/temporomandibular joint disorder in the EDS patient.

Jane is also part owner of DRNA, Inc., a leading environmental company serving the dental market.  

Jane has been married since 1982 to Dr. John Mitakides, a dentist and internationally-recognized expert in TMJ disorder and craniofacial pain. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, and a member of the Professional Advisory Network of the Ehlers Danlos National Foundation, as well a nationally-known lecturer on Ehlers-Danlos disease in the TMJ patient.  They are the parents of a daughter, Katie, son, Andrew, and grandson Hutt.  Jane was born in Dayton, Ohio.
