What is telehealth?

Telehealth, sometimes called telemedicine, is a way to access healthcare without attending appointments in person. It uses communications technologies such as phone calls, video appointments, or secure online systems. Telehealth can be used to:

  • speak with a healthcare professional by phone or video
  • send secure messages, photos, or updates
  • track and share health information with your healthcare team

What are the benefits of telehealth?

Telehealth can support access to care while reducing the physical and practical challenges of attending appointments in person. While in-person appointments are sometimes necessary, telehealth may:

  • Make it easier to access healthcare professionals in different locations
  • Support more regular contact when ongoing input from healthcare professionals is needed
  • Reduce the need to travel, which can help when symptoms or responsibilities make travel difficult
  • Help manage energy by avoiding the physical demands of attending appointments
  • Allow appointments to take place in a familiar and comfortable environment
  • Reduce the risk of passing infections between people

What are the limitations of telehealth?

Telehealth is not suitable for every person or provider. It may be less helpful when a physical examination or hands-on care is needed. Other factors may also affect how well telehealth works, including:

  • Insurance or healthcare plan coverage
  • Limited access to reliable internet or suitable devices
  • Difficulties using technology
  • Concerns about privacy or having a quiet space for appointments

Telehealth is often one part of a wider approach to care. In-person appointments may still be needed.

How can I access telehealth?

You can access telehealth through:

  • Your primary care provider or general practitioner
  • Hospital or specialist clinics
  • Allied health services

If you are unsure whether telehealth is right for you, speak to a healthcare professional. They can help you decide what approach best supports your needs. They can also explain how to book and what to expect.
